I got to spend time with the Juniors this evening - very fun! But more challenging than the Older Girls. They are worried so much about hanging out with the "right" person.
We are trying to guide them to a girl-led take action project for the "Get Moving" Journey. With the Cadette, it was so easy - I explained what we were after, and off they went, brainstorming, discussing, and voting.
Not as easy with Juniors, although I know them learning this stuff now will make my life easier when they get older! We had to go over all the topics again, and then the girls kept coming up with projects that would be fun or creative, but they couldn't figure out how to share the project with other people, or how the project might help other people. But by the end of the meeting, they were starting to get it. They are all supposed to think about it before the next meeting, and come with an idea to share. But since next week is Easter break (no meeting) I will be mighty surprised if any of them remember. I will have to try to email them and remind them...

"Sow What" workshop
We did this on April 2 (I think.)
We joined another troop, and explored the food network. We had guest speakers come from the local Earth Fare grocery store, a registered dietitian, a compost expert, and a gardener.
We made organic soup for lunch, tested soil samples, talked about where food comes from, watched clips from "Food, Inc." and sampled lots of different organic food (donated by Earth Fare.)
For the TAP, we planted seeds. At our yearly camporee in May, they will share with the younger girls what they learned about food, why growing your own food is important, and give them a plant. We will also serve them soup for supper (we made extra so we could do this.)
I think as far as the journey goes, it was a really good approach. But it really is not very girl led. And the TAP is totally not girl led, which bothers me.
The workshop approach is great for having speakers come and doing some group activities. But it's no good from the girl led point of view. We need to figure out a way to incorporate both into the journey...

April 12
Had a yoga instructor come and lead entire troop in some exercises. Worked well for Juniors "Get moving" and Cadettes "Breathe." Then met with the Cadettes and started making duct tape bracelets.
March 22
Older girl meeting... After we took a walk for the "Breathe" journey, we did some brainstorming about a take action project. The girls came up with the idea of giving duct tape bracelets (with anti-smoking sentiments on them) to fellow classmates.
Will it change the world? No. But the girls came up with it ENTIRELY on their own.
So next meeting we'll see if we can learn how to make duct tape bracelets...

Breathe Journey Workshop
We attempted to do this Journey as a workshop on March 12. We had 8 girls, who got a crash course in air. We did the symphony of silence, made bath sachets, rosewater lotion (fail) and melon cucumber sugar scrub. We did a couple of the science experiments, and then had a lady teach us some tai chi basics. We also looked up different air careers on line.
In the afternoon, we - how sad is it that I don't remember what all we did that afternoon? I know we finished up by talking about the Take action project, and we "guided" the girls to repot spider plants to give to their favorite teacher, to help clear the air in their classrooms.
They have to keep an air log, and return it to their leader. And then we will use email to follow up and affirm how the project went.

March 8
This was the annual pancake supper at the church were we meet. So we canceled our regular meeting and just had a meeting with the girls going to Atlanta. We tried to cram WAY too much stuff into an hour. Oh well - next time we'll have a better idea how long it really takes to work through the troop trip handbook.

Feb 22
The "Breathe" journey didn't go as well tonight - the girls are getting a little bored. We will discuss careers and do a air observation next time, and then focus on the project. Although I still have yoga, rose lotion, and baking eclairs planned - but I know those will all be enjoyed, and we can do them any time. If I combine that with the project, it should all finish up nicely. Maybe baking eclairs will turn out to be our celebration...
The Juniors finished up the cookie badge.

Feb 15
No older girls. I focused on supplying cookies to parents, and taking money. The Juniors made recycled bead bracelets.
Feb 8th
We continued working on the "Breathe" Journey. We talked about scents, and made the lavender bath sachet. The girls are interested in trying the rose lotion, so I'll try to find some rose petals for that. We lit a candle, and the girls seemed to really enjoy the whole thing.

Feb 1st
No older girls today - so we did cookie posters with all the younger girls, and I worked on the cookie badge with the juniors...
Jan 25
Today we worked on the second session of "Breathe." We made bath sachets, turned off the lights, and lit a yummy smelling candle. For our opening ceremony, we just went around, and everyone shared anything they wanted to. I was pleasantly surprised that they wanted to do this - even my quiet girls shared.
So we talked about smells, and air pollution, and what is actually in air. We talked about the air log - they understand this is required to earn the award. We'll see how many of them bring it back...
We stuck our pieces of tape all over the church to collect dust. And since we had some extra time, we did one of the science experiments from session 3 - the one that shows air has weight.
For our closing, we tried to sit for 1 minute with no noise. Didn't work. Lots of giggles... I think we'll keep trying this - maybe by the end of this journey we'll be able to pull this off....

Started "Breathe"
We officially started the "Breathe" journey on Jan 18. The girls seemed to have fun with the symphony of noise. We worked through the first session, pretty much the way it's laid out in the book.
